As for meals - I cook in big quantities then freeze in meals for the fam. Saves a lot of time. I cook a lot on Fri-Sun then use the frozen stuff Mon-Thurs.

Oh man, for me it's snacking between coming home and having dinner. I am starving when I get home and eat whatever. So, I've been trying to make a point to keep an easy snack at work to have later in the afternoon (so far, yogurt, cottege cheese, etc). I gained a lot of weight during my first marathon attempt (2008) and this time found the biggest solution for me was to make sure to have a recovery drink within 30 min of finishing long runs. I use Hammer products: Recoverite. If I have that, my appetite is normal the rest of the day. If I don't, I'm ravenous and eat WAY TOO MUCH the rest of the day. Insatiable. Hopefully the steps you've outlined will get you to where you want to me. They seem to be good ones for sure.

It's that whole "food as fuel" vs "food as fun" argument. In America, we definitely eat for the fun of it. But you are back on the right track, so many people are unaware or in denial. 100K?! Okay Forrest Gump! LOL!

If I don't have healthy snacks throughout the day my week is pretty much shot. Water consumption...which is typically a non-issue for me but when I notice my water consumption decreasing, my food choices are usually worse.

I need to track because I will completely forget that I already had dessert at lunch while I am munching on some other dessert around dinner time. Food amnesia perhaps?

I learned the hard way that I can't eat more with extra activity. I had a nice little plateau when I was in bootcamp because I felt like I earned the extra food. Wrong...lol. I am in another self induced plateau right now because I am so close to 100 lbs gone and I keep tripping myself up. And I am completely aware when I do it. Pretty insane...

I used to be a snacker but I've gotten away from it. My thing is that I used to be dogmatic about eating every 3 hours which resulted in me eating when I wasn't really hungry. Now I will have a snack only if I'm hungry. I've just been trending towards snacking out of boredom and not hunger lately and that's is no good!

That feeling like you earned something mentality when it comes to food is simply no good for me. I should eat because I'm hungry or because my body needs to be refueled - not as a reward. If I eat as a reward, then I deserve a cookie everytime LOL!

100 pounds? Go Clu! I think awareness of your habits is important even if you don't make moves to correct the problem immediately. Knowing there is a problem is half the battle.

Thank you for posting this! I gained about the same amount of weight when I moved cross-country last year, and was having a tough time taking it off -- mostly because I wasn't paying attention. I have tried to never be a scale-watcher, but my eating wasn't as healthy as it had been, I gained weight, my running slowed down, and my jeans stopped fitting.

So I did something similar to what you described (even more veggies than usual, fewer simple carbs, and less random snacking right before bed -- my baddest of bad habits). I'm not turning away an occasional slice of Mardi Gras king cake. No starving. No strict plans or measuring stuff -- and so far it seems to be working!

I've avoided the scale because I know what's up! It's a classic denial situation. Agreed with not being super strict - I don't think I need to be with the amount of exercise that I do weekly. I also don't need to have dessert every day or consume nuts in the car like a squirrel when I'm not hungry either! There is a balance somewhere.

When I started running regularly my appetite was off the charts, even with my little 2 and 3 miles at a time. I was just ravenous! I think I have settled into a routine of eating better choices and giving in to eating enough food. I tried following Weight Watchers strictly while training for my first half marathon and I found my energy zapped.
Yeah. It is weird because my appetite doesn't necessarily follow my workout and the hunger might hit a day or two after a long hard run. That sucks because that might be a rest day where I don't need a ton of food. SMH. I think dieting is hard when you are training for something big but I should definitely be able to avoid gaining weight and even lose weight slowly by being making better choices as you've said.

My kids call Cheez-its "mommy crackers". Once I get started with those I can't stop! Good luck on your 100k, how exciting! You've come so far!

"Mommy crackers" I love it! Funny how kids actually do pay attention to what we eat. I was kind of proud one day when I asked Lewis what I should have for dinner and he said broccoli. He always sees me eating it and I'm always offering it to him (to no avail).

Thanks for the preview, I am in for the 100k and have never run this trail before. I was interested to know how technical the trail was and appreciate your scouting the terrain and providing tips. I do enjoy the road sections I find it nice to have a break from worrying about doing the superman sprawl.

Thanks! Since I'm local, I really wanted to attend the course training runs to help ease my mind. I've run in the park before (Gahuti) but not on that part of Pinhoti before. I will try to look at road running sections as a break from potential falls. I never though about it like that. :)

All I can say is that you have guts of steel. You won't catch me getting the mail in 16 degree temps much less running a trail. Whoohoo, girl!

Girl! I only did it because I know it is good for me. I definitely prefer the extreme cold to the extreme heat out there in August!
