2011: This Year I Want To…

I have no issues with New Year’s resolution posts.  Everyone always posts that they don’t like to make resolutions but feels compelled to make some anyway.  I think it is just one of those things you just have to do.

I feel like most of the goals I listed here are achievable (maybe not the lifting goals though).  I have already been working towards most of these things for a while.  Not a lot of dramatic proclamations here.  These are more like challenges for myself that will encourage me to continue in the direction that I’m already headed.

Wait – does that just mean I made a “here are my resolutions that aren’t really resolutions but still are resolutions” post? Shoot!

CrossFit

  • Stop using the band during workouts
  • Become proficient enough at double-unders to do them in workouts
  • Be capable of competing in Rx’d division
  • Become 100% comfortable with 95lb ground to overhead lifts (snatches, split jerks, etc)

Strength

  • Do 10 unassisted dead hang pullups in a row
  • Bench press my bodyweight
  • Shoulder press 3/4 of my bodyweight
  • Deadlift 2x my bodyweight

Running

  • Set new PRs for 5K and 10K distance
  • Explore trail running

General Health/Fitness

  • Be more generally active outside of scheduled workouts: I will happily exercise 6 days/week but outside of that workout you have to drag me from my desk at work.  I will get a pedometer and move more outside of workouts.  I am the active coach potato!
  • Drink more water on the weekends: I drink tons of water at work.  When I get home I drink almost nothing.  That is fine during the week since I easily get in 2L of water during the day.  On the weekends though?  I hardly drink anything unless I have a race or long run and am consciously trying to hydrate/re-hydrate.

What are your goals for the year?  As you consider, here are a few quotes that struck me as I was thinking about New Year’s resolutions:

From Rog Law Fitness:

If you’re not acting on your goal, then it’s not important enough to you….yet. Harsh, I know. If you consistently say that you want to lose weight but spend the free time that you have doing things that don’t bring you any closer to that goal, then you’ve just proven my point.

From Heath Brothers:

Rely on planning, not willpower. Your Resolution calls for a new way of behaving. And that’s a challenge because you’ve been practicing the old way of behaving for a long time. The old way is well-paved and familiar and comfortable. So you can’t just bet on willpower or good intentions to ensure your success. Use your planning skills. Get yourself on the hook for something!

Great goals. I hope you meet each ond every one of them!

You sound just like me with the water. I don’t drink much of anything after work. I am trying to do better too.

It seems like when I drink after 6PM I have to go to the bathroom too early! I sipped some water last night and was up at 5AM needing to go. So pissed because I wanted my last 15 minutes of rest.
