I had to do a 6-mile run at the gym today so I took up my usual treadmill facing the free weights section. I like this machine because A) it is one of the few treadmills that has a built in fan (every little bit helps) and B) watching people do weights is way more interesting that watching the cardio folks.
Anyway, I tend to see the same people doing the same things, the usual suspects so to speak. There’s the old lady who always does like 15 sets of this weird ab exercise on the incline bench and nothing else. There’s the man with the beach ball beer belly that can bench press a gazillion pounds. There’s the really, really old man on the recumbent bike who is moving so slow that I think he’s fallen asleep. The usual suspects.
There are a few women in there though that have really great bodies. I watch them with a bit more interest (well as much interest as I can while doing 8:20 min miles LOL) because I want to know what they doing to get such good definition. These chicks are few and far between unfortunately. There’s a lot of people who are either working hard to lose weight or super skinny chicks with no definition whatsoever just messing around.
Today a new person, Oxygen girl, came through. I call her that because she looked like an Oxygen magazine cover chick. I was so inspired to see someone look like that in real life. She didn’t look like a bodybuilder, more like a fitness/figure chick. You could tell her body was the result of working out and a good diet (or amazing genetics). I admire hard work because I know how hard I work at this stuff and I am just scratching the surface of true dedication. I seriously wanted to go up to her and say “Good job! I want to look like you when I grow up (and can eat clean and stop stuffing my face so with junk)!”
She worked that floor – hard. I don’t know what the exercise is called, but you put your feet on a stability ball while your upper body is a plank position. Then you use your core to roll the ball in and back out. I can handle that exercise and I know it is no fun. She flipped it though and after the rollout did a full pushup before repeating. Perfect form, no wavering, no falling off the ball. I wanted to applaud LOL!
In any case, Oxygen girl was just what I needed to see this morning to remind me of my goals. I can do this and the results of hard work can be awesome! After this wedding madness is over, I am going to start re-reading Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle again. I really want to refocus and lose this last 10 pounds that I’ve been trying to lose for the past 6 months. I’ve come a long way and rather than sitting around congratulating myself and slowly losing ground – I need to finish what I started.

I’m right where you are (except no wedding madness – done that already
– and all I can say is keep up your super hard work! And it’s great to have some real life motivation – I do that in the gym as well. I should start following them around (unnoticed, hopefully)
We can both do it, I know it!
AT22: I so wanted to ask her to take me under her wing and tell me what to do so that I can look like that. Alas, I already know what to do. I’ve just got to get better at doing it!
I LOVE gym personalities! They really do motivate and entertain. My favorites are 1) Slatsvana – this chic that’s got to be from Turkey or a neighboring country whose got the Oxygen body and 2) Ms. Jenkins that walks at a 15 min mile pace with a 4+ incline. Over time she’s gained hella definition in her legs; but she’s still got a quite a gut.
Keep up the hard work!!!!
Hey K.I.M! Slatsvana LOL. I love names. I haven’t quite named anyone in my head yet. Treadmill lady needs to pick up the pace to lose the gut. Getting stuck in a workout rut is not a great thing.
and I love that you didnt look at her and immediately want to tear her down….it says volumes about YOUR confidence level that you could admire!
I once took a year off from weights (story for another day) and was SHOCKED when I returned to the same gym how many of the same people were there doing the SAME THINGS and looking the same way.
nary a physique change among em.
hmmmm.
Thanks MizFit! I couldn’t have hated on her if I tried.
i wish the cardio machines in my gym faced people- ours face a window to nothing. id much rather people watch.
I LOVE that exercise with the stability ball. i actually did a video on it and posted it on my site a while back.
good for you for using her as an inspiration istead of a way to tear yourself down with negative thoughts. you sound like you have more motivation than you give yourself credit for
I have to have a little people watching. When someone steals my fave treadmill and I have to stare at nothingness my run gets that much longer. Going to have to check that video out because I see a face plant in my future if I attempt it now LOL.
