The Heat

I give up.  I am officially running scared of the Atlanta weather.  I went for a 2.5 mile run Thursday morning which should be easy at this point.  I hit the street at 6:15AM and the temps were in the low seventies but it felt sauna-like outside after the first mile.  The rest of my easy run just dragged on and I took walk breaks that I wouldn’t have taken had it not been so warm and muggy.

It is amazing how it feels OK outside until you start doing some physical activity.  When I go to CrossFit bootcamp (indoors but no AC) it is the same thing.  6AM and hot as blazes during our workouts.  When I leave for the gym to hit the showers?  It feels all cool and great!

iCan’t.  The weather is affecting my running.  I can’t get faster or build endurance when I’m too busy trying to process the temperature.  I don’t have any outdoor races planned until Fall (and I have a full slate then…more on that later!) so there is no need to torture myself this way since I won’t be running under these conditions.  I will continue my runs – indoors!  At least now my LA Fitness membership will get used for more than the locker room showers.

  1. I hear you! It’s been running temps of high 90s to low 100s here in Dallas. I can’t even walk to the car w/o feeling like I’m going to get heat stroke. I wonder how this will affect my fitness boot camp next week?

100′s! I always thought Texas might be a nice place to move if I left ATL. Now I know it isn’t LOL! It is still hot at my 6AM bootcamp. They open the big back door (garage style) and turn on a fan but it doesn’t help. We do a lot of stuff outside but it is still hot. I watch the sweat drops pool down on the floor wherever I am. I beg them to turn on the AC but no one listens. Sigh. My white gym towels are my friend. Maybe I need a sweatband too!

Gah, this is exactly what i’m afraid of! Baby like waking for the day at 6:30 am, before it heats up, so I may start trying to get in a run early, before the sun starts attacking! There’s an indoor track, but I have to drive to get there. I guess i have to weigh the option of doing it painfully early in the morning, or packing up the baby to go across town.

I think before sunrise is the key. It is daylight by 6AM here and I’m just not willing to get up at 4:30AM to pull myself together and run. Not right now when Lewis doesn’t go to sleep until 10-10:30 PM!

I’m running the HBCU 5k on the 26th. I haven’t been able to do Amy training outside and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to run the entire race.

You’ve run 5Ks before! You’ll be fine! The heat will be fierce though…be forewarned. And don’t feel bad if you can’t run the entire time…especially when it is hot. I don’t feel too bad about taking brief walk breaks. I just make the most of my run time and go fast.
