A friend of mine, an experienced marathoner, qualified for Boston a few years ago. He qualified with a sub 3:00:00 time and was raring to go. On race day it was conditions much like you describe, only hotter. I think it might have hit 80 that day. No one was prepared for that heat in Boston at that time of year. He described his experience much like yours and finished way over his goal time.

Bottom line: It happens to the best of us.

Message: It was a challenge and you did it, despite all that. Congratulations.

Thanks AT22! I think that same thing happened in Chicago last year. 80 degrees and not enough water - a real disaster. Richmond was nowhere near that bad. I just don't like putting a whole lot of physical and mental effort into something can be so easily ruined things beyond my control. I guess that applies to most of life though so nothing left to do but hope for the best and move on to the next thing.

I haven't seen you in the usual spots for a while now. I was wondering what happened to you!

I have been lurking on your blog for awhile. I am not sure how I found you, but you really inspire me to do better with my own quest for a healthy lifestyle -- so I keep coming back.

I live in Richmond and thought of you during the marathon. First let me say - CONGRATS for finishing. I know your time is not what you wanted but you still finished in a respectable time. Second - it was a hot, muggy, LOUSY day here. I felt bad for you. I'm sure wearing the long pants did not help. I'm not making excuses for you - those are just the facts.

I did not realize you are from Richmond. I just moved here in February 2008 and we love it! Maybe I will get to meet you one day.

Keep up the great work and keep blogging!

Thanks for reading and if my little exploits can inspire anyone that makes me so happy!

I am Richmond born and bred. I grew up in the East End in Henrico Cty. I left for Atlanta after graduating from UR, but home will always be home! The rest of my family is still there. My parents live in Chester now though so I get all confused when I go "home" because I never dealt with that area before. I actually have to ask for directions and stuff LOL.

I feel much better about the marathon thing now. I did it, I didn't do too terribly and now I have a 26.2 sticker on my car. Onto other pursuits!

I do have beef with Richmond (yes the whole city) now. Why was the weather absolutely marathon perfect on Sunday at 8AM when I was leaving? It was chilly enough and there were blue skies. Just my luck LOL!

Congratulations on finishing the marathon! Even when I was your age I couldn't even dream of going thru what you did to train and then to race in the unexpected heat. It took a lot of guts to stick it out to the end. You should be very proud of this accomplishment.

Thanks Clara! I owe you an email. I will get right on that!
